Overview & History

What is the Partnership for a Healthy Colorado (P4HC)?
P4HC is an unprecedented coalition of labor, business, health care, advocacy, and faith-based  organizations that have declared the current health care system “unacceptable.”  We share the goal of  access to quality affordable health care for every Coloradan, and we recognize the imperative to reach  across traditional political and philosophical lines to achieve that goal.  As an unlikely alliance, we seek to bridge the divides, unite around common values, and create meaningful health care reform for  Coloradans.

History
In 2007, Governor Bill Ritter convened the Blue Ribbon Commission for Health Care Reform.  The commission brought together organizations and people from across the health care spectrum to address Colorado’s health care crisis.  Although these groups didn’t agree on everything, there was one inescapable truth—the current system is failing.

After the Commission’s work ended, a group decided to keep the momentum going.  Those organizations formed P4HC.  After six months of careful negotiation, the partners created consensus around 13 health care reform principles.  In turn, these common sense principles attracted a broader group of organizations to the discussion.

As of July 2009, the partnership has grown to 24 members, and the breadth of the partnership is unique
in Colorado’s health care reform movement.

Value
While bridging the health care divide, the partners learned that we agree more than we disagree.  P4HC  is proof that comprehensive health care reform is possible.

While the partnership does not agree on every issue, P4HC provides Colorado’s state and federal policy makers direct access to a diverse group of health care policy experts.  As decision-makers tackle the difficult issues surrounding health care access, costs, and quality, P4HC provides the expertise to answer the tough questions.

P4HC draws upon the knowledge and expertise of our partners to discover and develop points of agreement on comprehensive health care reform.  We educate our constituencies about the components of our health care system, and prepare them for the choices they will be asked to make.  In turn, P4HC builds forward momentum in the health care reform movement.
